Demographic Data Standard
Exciting news! The demographic data standards on race, ethnicity, language, disability, and tribal affiliation are now an administrative rule—one that is effective across all City bureaus and offices that are working with the public. Examples of the public may include, but are not limited to, people accessing City services or programs, people participating in community engagement with the City, and people working in partnership with the City through contracts or grants.
What does this mean? If there are no preempting standards and there is a need to collect data about race, ethnicity, language, disability, or tribal rights, these City standards are required.

The demographic data standards on gender identity, sexual orientation and living situation have gotten additional community input and are being finalized. The demographic data standards on age, income, household size, education level, employment status and location have been set and the final guidance is currently being drafted.
Metadata Standard
The metadata standards have been officially approved by the City Data Governance Committee. The purpose of a citywide metadata standard is to leverage industry best practices of having a consistent way of summarizing basic descriptive information about data—which will facilitate an easier route of finding and working with instances of data. This standard is not intended to capture all information about a given dataset but rather to provide a starting point and to overlap with existing bureau-level metadata standards.
During this first pilot phase, the metadata standard will be a requirement for data (or semantic models) Certified in Power BI. Following the standard will be optional for all other data.

Power BI Data Certification
The City Data Governance Committee has created a standardized process for Certification of data (also known as semantic models) in Power BI. This process is meant to ensure that data that ends up in a shared City space in Power BI has undergone a review process, decreasing the likelihood of multiple datasets serving the same purpose or someone inadvertently using out of date or poor-quality data. Implementation details are in development in partnership with the Bureau of Technology Services (BTS).
