This is the first time that the City of Portland celebrates Open Data day. The goal for the open data program is to make data available to the public, creating ways to engage with community needs and opportunities.
The city organized a series of live presentations for the open data day. These presentations intend to create awareness in city staff on the importance of best practices in data management in city bureaus.
An additional workshop on how to prepare the bureaus open data strategy will be offered to city staff involved on open data management from noon to 1 PM.

10 - 10:30 a.m. Data, Strategy, and Decision-Making: Using Performance Management to Improve Outcomes. Presented by Angela Butel and Douglas Imaralu, budget analysts in the City Budget Office and co-lead the Citywide performance management program.

10:30 - 11 a.m. How to include demographic data in your data collection strategy. Presented by Danielle Brooks, Civil Rights Title VI & Equity Manager at the Office of Equity and Human Rights. She has been working on developing the demographics data standard for the city.

11 - 11:30 a.m. Open Data as a path for better public trust and engagement. Presented by Hector Dominguez, Open Data Coordinator at the City of Portland, Oregon. Hector has led the open data, privacy and surveillance technologies initiatives. His work includes ethical use of technology and the city’s privacy and open data toolkit.
This presentation explores how open data can be an effective way to create transparency and public engagement for city programs.
11:30 a.m. - noon. ESRI hubs and how cities use open data sites. Presented by John Ruffing, City of Portland ESRI liaison. John helps local governments and organizations to derive meaningful insight, visualize and manage data for solving real world problems. He has a B.A. in Business with concentrations in G.I.S. and Spanish. He has been working in the spatial intelligence and technology industry for over 15 years from private industry to local government.
The citywide open data portal uses ESRI platform and tools to make data available in diverse forms. Learn about the tools used for building the city open data portal. Data can be accessible by partners and the public, using leading edge technology for open data management.
Noon - 1 p.m. Workshop: Building your bureau open data strategy. This hands-on workshop will help bureaus to learn about best practices for building the agency’s open data strategy.
Who should attend: data managers, supervisors, analysts involved in data and information processing, programs analysis, data sharing agreements, reporting and maintaining data for business intelligence and public engagement.
