How do we work with schools?
Youth will inherit the legacy of our decisions on climate, so they should have a voice in solutions to help mitigate the catastrophic impacts of climate change. The Portland Clean Energy Community Benefits Fund (PCEF) is supporting approximately 90 K-12 public schools in seven school districts in the city of Portland as part of an annual funding opportunity.
We provide funding for climate projects across the following categories:
- Clean energy
- Transportation decarbonization
- Regenerative agriculture and green infrastructure
- Workforce and contractor development
The two opportunities are in student-led initiatives and physical improvements.
Student-led initiatives
Approximately 50 Portland middle and high schools with grade levels K-8, K-12, 6-8, and 8-12 will receive $15,000 per year.
- $10,000 to fund student-led climate initiatives.
- $5,000 to for teacher/district support students.
Physical improvements
We fund physical improvement projects that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improve climate resiliency. The key areas of funding will help with:
- Buildings. To address deferred maintenance and improve energy efficiency.
- Transportation. Electrifying school buses to reduce carbon emissions, improved air quality, and reduce operating and maintenance costs.
- Yards. Implement green infrastructure by planting trees and other plants to help with urban shade and water management.
What are student-led initiatives?
Student-led initiatives are designed to fit the following parameters:
- Must include decision-making process that clearly demonstrates student empowerment and leadership. For example, decision-making could be made through participatory budgeting, student elective class, and student clubs.
- Must demonstrate connection to GHG reduction or sequestration.
- Must demonstrate connection to one of the PCEF funding areas – clean energy, transportation, green infrastructure, regenerative agriculture, or workforce and contractor development.
- Must be implemented within the city of Portland.
