Project Area
This project is in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood and is bounded by SE Powell Boulevard to the north, SE Holgate Street to the south, SE 122nd Avenue to the west, and SE 148th Avenue to the east.
The map below shows all of the locations of the green street planters that are in need of renovation. All of the locations are currently in design, except one that is located at SE Holgate Blvd east of SE 122nd Ave that will begin construction as soon as May 2025.
What's Happening Now
Crews will begin working at the SE Holgate Blvd east of SE 122nd Ave green street planter on Tuesday, May 27. A tree and plants will be removed first. Construction is anticipated to take two to three weeks, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. There may be traffic impacts. For more information about how construction may impact you, refer to what to expect during construction.

Project Background
Over the past two decades, Environmental Services has built over 2,000 green street planters across the city. Green street planters are regularly inspected and maintained by staff. In recent years, staff have documented a trend of soil erosion and sinking in some of the planters. In some planters, soil erosion is occurring on the sidewalk side of the planter, creating an unintended drop into the planter. This can cause a void underneath the sidewalk. Measures have been taken to ensure the public is safe.
During the design of this project, Environmental Services will be checking for this condition and will determine how to resolve it from happening in the future.
What are Green Streets?
Green street planters, also known as rain gardens or bioswales, are landscaped areas between the street and the sidewalk that use plants and soil to slow, filter, and clean stormwater running off streets and sidewalks. Traditional stormwater management directs runoff into pipes. A green street manages stormwater before it enters the sewer system.
