Powellhurst-Gilbert Green Street Renovation Project

Sewer and Stormwater
Active
Environmental Services is designing a project in your neighborhood to assess, improve, replace, or repair 45 green street planters that were built in the last 16 years. Many have eroding or sinking soils, which can lead to other problems. Planter renovation will protect public health and safety.
This project is in design. Construction is anticipated to begin the early winter of 2024.

Project Background

Over the past two decades, Environmental Services has built over 2,000 green street planters across the city. Green street planters are regularly inspected and maintained by staff. In recent years, staff have documented a trend of soil erosion and sinking in some of the planters. In some planters, soil erosion is occurring on the sidewalk side of the planter, creating an unintended drop into the planter. This can cause a void underneath the sidewalk. Measures have been taken to ensure the public is safe.

During the design of this project, Environmental Services will be checking for this condition and will determine how to resolve it from happening in the future.

What are Green Streets?

Green street planters, also known as rain gardens or bioswales, are landscaped areas between the street and the sidewalk that use plants and soil to slow, filter, and clean stormwater running off streets and sidewalks. Traditional stormwater management directs runoff into pipes. A green street manages stormwater before it enters the sewer system.
