What are Sumps and Sedimentation Maintenance Holes?

A sump maintenance hole (sump) is a large, concrete cylinder installed under a street that temporarily holds stormwater while slowly releasing it into the ground. The sump is connected to a storm drain and a separate tank, called a sedimentation maintenance hole, that filters out garbage and pollutants.

For more information about sump maintenance holes and other ways in which BES manages stormwater, visit portland.gov/bes/manage-stormwater.

Illustration that shows a car parked on the street, with a raincloud overhead. Under the street shows a storm drain with a pipe into a sedimentation manhole, connected to a sump or underground injection control (UIC).

This project will help protect the health of the Willamette River Watershed.
