The pressurized pipe (force main) system that connects the Inverness Pump Station to the treatment plant includes two pressurized force main lines:
- An 8.7 mile long pipe that is 24 inches in diameter. It was installed in the 1980's.
- A 10.6 mile long pipe with a diameter that ranges from 36 inches to 20 inches in diameter. It was installed in the late 1990's.
Because of the high-pressure environment of the pipes, and the caustic nature of the flows they carry, force mains have a shorter service life than typical gravity flow sewer pipes. Some sections of the two force mains that serve the Inverness Pump Station are in poor, or unknown, condition. This project will inspect these two important force mains, and then conduct necessary repairs to help reduce the risk of failures in the Inverness Force Main system
Project Location
The Inverness Pump Station is in Northeast Portland north of I-84 and east of I-205, slightly north of the Columbia Slough and south of the Columbia River. It is in the Parkrose Neighborhood, next door to the Multnomah County Inverness Jail. Two force mains (pressurized pipes) carry sanitary sewer flows from the pump station to the Columbia Boulevard Wastewater Treatment Plant (CBWTP).

What's Happening Now?
Environmental Services Staff are currently in the project development phase of this project. Staff are working throughout the project area to identify the condition of the force mains and prioritize areas that need repair. This summer, staff will begin to construct repair solutions for each area that needs rehabilitation. Design work will continue alongside some construction activities until the summer of 2027. Construction is expected to continue until the fall of 2028.
