Environmental Services 2021 Student Internship Program

Information
Environmental Services offers paid student internships every year. Students attending a trade school, college, or university are eligible to apply. We have positions in engineering, maintenance, stormwater management, business administration, and more.

Qualifications and Pay

To be eligible for an Environmental Services student internship, you must be:

  • Enrolled in a trade school training program, college, or university; and
  • Located in the Portland metropolitan area during the term of the internship.

Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. We give preference to students studying in a field related to the mission and scope of the Bureau's work.  

Environmental Services pays student interns an hourly rate according to your upcoming year in school:

  • First Year - $14.56
  • Sophomore - $15.59
  • Junior - $16.62
  • Senior and up - $17.66

Both full-time and part-time internships are available.

What can you expect to learn during this internship?

  • Conducting program outreach

Delivery Programs: Industrial Stormwater & Maintenance

Positions available:  Part-time; full year

What can you expect to learn during this internship?

  • Basic understanding of stormwater management facility types and associated operations and maintenance requirements
  • Basic understanding of industrial stormwater discharge permit requirements
  • Ability to read and understand analytical monitoring reports for conventional stormwater pollutants
  • Compliance inspection processes for associated programs (ISW & MIP)

Delivery Programs: Manuals, Code and Rule

Positions available:  Part-time; full year

What can you expect to learn during this internship?

  • The regulatory tools the City uses to protect watershed health and the City’s infrastructure. 
  • The relationship between state and federal environmental regulations and City programs. 
  • Hands-on experience with understanding the design, performance and maintenance requirements of vegetated stormwater facilities. 
  • Approaches to policy analysis.

  • Technical aspects of characterizing water quality in the City’s stormwater system

Engineering Services – Sewer, Stormwater and Restoration Design

Positions available:  We are looking for a full-time summer intern, with the potential to extend into a full year internship as schedules allow.

What can you expect to learn during this internship?

This position will perform specialized support and technical assignments of entry level to moderate difficulty applying scientific and technical knowledge in the areas of engineering, construction and permit processing, including explaining policies and procedures to the public to achieve  understanding, cooperation and compliance with codes; computer operation, research, map reading, plan review; and performs related duties as assigned.

Operations and Maintenance Group: Sanitary & Combined Maintenance Engineering

Positions available:   Two positions. Part-time; full year

What can you expect to learn during this internship?

  • Interns will become familiar with the activities of an engineering section in the Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) including condition assessment of assets, evaluating maintenance options for assets, and evaluating rehabilitation options for assets.
  • Interns will become familiar with the principles of Asset Management touching on asset failure modes, likelihood of failure, consequence of failure, and risk assessments of assets.
  • Interns will work in a team environment and have the opportunity to collaborate with and assist engineers and technicians in the workgroup.

Positions available:  Part-time; full year

What can you expect to learn during this internship?

  • Conduct research on a variety of surface water/environmental issues
  • Utilize GIS and other mapping tools
  • Data collection and analysis techniques

  • Field work; participate in site visits/investigations, visiting restoration project sites, etc.
