Inspectors may wear masks for inspections, maintain social distancing
Inspectors from the Bureau of Development Services may choose to wear masks for in-person inspections. Inspectors will wear masks where required or if requested by a property owner, permit applicant or job site manager.
The Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Program Guide has been revised to provide clarification on current requirements and regulations for accessory dwelling units. Please be aware of the following changes made in the guide, effective December 21, 2018.
City Council passed an ordinance on June 27, 2018 to extend a waiver of system development charges (SDCs) for accessory dwelling units (ADUs) with additional requirements to contribute to Portland’s housing capacity.
Effective September 16, 2019: BDS has approved a new code guide that will allow additional dwelling units, specifically Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), to be constructed within Townhouses if certain requirements are met, and will provide clear requirements for spaces used in common.
To encourage development and increase housing stock, the Portland City Council began waiving SDC fees assessed to ADU permits in 2010. Last year, City Council revised the SDC waiver and reaffirmed a June 30, 2020 deadline for previously approved ADUs to complete construction.
