2019-2020 Budget Summary

Information
The Auditor's Office budget should be an expression of the elected Auditor's values.

The Auditor's Office 2019-2020 budget represents a minuscule investment but delivers money-saving recommendations and better, more equitable government when they are implemented.

Bar graph representing the 2019-2020 Auditor's Office budget. 33.3 percent of the budget is allocated to archives, 28.2 percent to investigations, 23.8 percent to performance audits, and 14.7 percent to public access and operations management.

The Auditor's Office has twice tried unsuccessfully to persuade City Council to relinquish its line-item control over the Auditor's Budget. Without budgetary independence, City Council members, given their dual roles as legislators and Commissioners-in-Charge of the bureaus we audit and investigate, exert improper control over the Auditor's Office through the City's budget process.

We won't give up trying to fix the problem. Portlanders deserve a fully independent Auditor's Office. We will continue to advocate for a modest and fiscally responsible budgetary framework that protects the Auditor's independence.
